Based in Lisbon, Portugal, the architectural practice of Aires Mateus is run by two brothers Manuel and Francisco. a+u 18:04 is their first monograph with the publication and explores their contemporary reinterpretation of Portuguese architectural tradition.
Over the last 30 years, their practice started with small-scale residential and local buildings, then steadily expanded internationally. Although their projects have increased in scale, they have maintained an attention to detail and continue to experiment on ways to innovate with light and form. The idea of timelessness and permanence in their design is evident in preservation projects when they incorporate existing elements and structures.
