This title includes a text in Danish. This work describes and analyses monuments and memorials throughout Denmark, from Copenhagen to the Danish-German border area. Based on a nation-wide survey of Danish memorial culture and extensive field work, the author shows how national identity is rooted in the cultural landscape. Other central themes include the politics of public memory - its geography, history and efficacy - and the destruction of monuments during and after wars, which is described in detail. The book is illustrated with colour photographs of 60 monuments by the photographer Peter Bak Jensen and 15 maps over the events which have produced the most monuments.
